I am on a mission!

A mission to figure out how to use those “not-so-therapeutic” client-preferred songs and artists purposefully in our sessions.

So far, I’ve shared how you could use those songs during Name That Tune with a Twist and during Pop Music Relaxation experiences.

Today, I’m sharing an idea I came up with during covid when all my sessions were virtual.

I had to figure out how to connect with my tween and teen clients across the computer screen.

So, I started coming up with Mini Musical Bios and turned them into a game of Guess Who.

I started with a list of a few of my clients’ favorite singers and bands.

For each one, I created a PDF with pictures and factoids about that singer or band – one factoid and picture per page.

I made them large and colorful and visually appealing.

Each factoid was a clue to see if my clients could guess who the singer or band was.

I tried to include a mix of basic info, such as “I am a singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and former professional surfer” and little known facts that might stump even the biggest fans, such as “I’m an environmentalist and care deeply about the world’s oceans.”

At the end of the PDF, I’d ask my clients to try to guess who the singer or band was.

This was a great way to encourage communication skills amongst my clients.

Following this, we would move into a musical experience that included a song by that singer or band. It could be music and movement, singing, instrument playing, etc – the possibilities are endless!

This was a great way to keep my middle and high school music therapy clients engaged and excited about coming to our sessions.

I am on a mission to figure out how to use “not so therapeutic” songs therapeutically.

I know for me, it is really tough when my clients or students like songs that are not necessarily “appropriate” for school, or seem to me to have little therapeutic value due to the content and lyrics.

But it’s important to me to learn how to use these songs in our sessions as a way to: a) validate my clients’ musical taste (therefore validating THEM!), and b) better engage them to work on their goals and objectives.

My brain LOVES this creative challenge, so I am sharing what I’ve come up with in this blog series.

In last week’s post, I shared how to facilitate Name That Tune with a Twist – it’s a simple way to work in those songs that you don’t know how to otherwise use purposefully.

(And to work on attention perception skills).

Today, I’m sharing another way to use not-so -therapeutic songs therapeutically: use them in relaxation experiences.

I play most of the music used in my sessions live, but for relaxation experiences I’ll often use recorded music. This way, my hands are free to model movements.

Here are some of my favorite songs to use during relaxation experiences:

“A Thousand Years” from Twilight – Piano Guys version

“Perfect” by Ed Sheeran – Conkarah Reggae cover

“Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha on violin

“Someday” from Disney’s Zombies ballad or reprise – karaoke track

“Bird Song” by The Wailin’ Jennys (I use this in my Spring-themed sessions)

“America the Beautiful” (for my patriotic-themed sessions)

“Buchanan Mist” by Paul Machlis (for St. Paddy’s day sessions)

“Wintersong” by Ingrid Michaelson & Sarah Bareilles (for winter-themed sessions)

These songs are familiar to my tween and teen clients, so there is instant engagement, but they also lend themselves to stretching, breathing, and winding down at the end of a session.

Here’s how to make this super customized for YOUR unique clients:

Search for the instrumental versions of their favorite songs (like “Meant to Be” on violin) or the karaoke track of their favorite songs (like “Someday” karaoke).

We are just about to roll into the new school year.

(How is that even possible when it feels like summer was just starting?!)

Nevertheless, a new school year is right around the corner.

So, I wanted to share some fresh ideas for your music therapy sessions and classes with school-age children and teens.

But not just any ideas!

Ideas for how to use not-so-therapeutic songs therapeutically.

Many of the songs that are popular now have content and lyrics that aren’t appropriate for use in our sessions (due to restrictions from a school or facility) or that make it difficult to figure out how to possibly use them in a therapeutic manner.

But client preferred music is the gold standard, right?

So what do we do when our clients prefer music that has inappropriate language or content?

I am here to share several ways you can use client-preferred and popular music in a therapeutic way, even if that may seem impossible at first.

This is a creative challenge that my brain LOVES, so I put together a little mini-series on the topic.

First up – Name That Tune with a Twist.

The twist is playing the song on your primary instrument or a symphonic instrument (which for me is clarinet!)

You could also pull up a recorded version on YouTube such as “Havana” by Camila Cabello on flute or “Ocean Eyes” by Billie Eilish on saxophone.

These exist – look them up for yourself!

I prefer to present using live music, but YouTube does have some very creative options.

Name That Tune is a great musical game to work on social communication skills in a group setting or auditory perception and listening skills in a one-on-one setting.

And, to the point of this blog post, it’s a great way to work some of those not-so-therapeutic songs into your sessions.

When your client recognizes a song by their favorite artist, it will light them up, excite, and engage them. It lets them know that you value them and their musical preferences.

So, they are more likely to participate for the duration of the musical experience, and more likely meet their goals and objectives.

If this idea has helped or sparked something for you, keep that spark alive! Now through August 31, 2025, you can sign up for Elevate at a discounted rate AND with some awesome bonus material.

Summer is in full swing!

My kids and I just returned home from an amazing trip to Colorado (it was our first time!)

We went on horseback rides with the Rockies as our back drop, rock climbed in the Arapaho National Forest, and tried archery for the first time.

We made some incredible memories, and now I’m back home catching up on emails and writing (even though I was able to keep up with a fair amount of work virtually).

Today I want to share a songwriting experience that I facilitated for teen students in the autistic support classroom of one of our nearby high schools.

One of the class periods I saw them happened to fall on Valentine’s Day, which can be a sensitive time for students who have mixed feelings about the holiday.

I decided to bring in the song “Nice To Have a Friend” by Taylor Swift and focus on friendships and the other non-romantic relationships we have.

Here’s how I facilitated this experience:

First, I handed out lyric sheets and we sang through the song together.

On the second page of the lyric sheet, I had a blank box where students, depending on their level, could write or draw things they like to do with their friends.

Next, we turned the ideas from the box into song lyrics for a Verse 3. We’ve done songwriting from scratch in the past, so we focused on the use of “rich language,” and the teachers and I helped the students craft lyrics using as much rich language as possible.

If each student was comfortable, we then took a turn singing through their Verse 3. They could sing it alone, or I could join with them.

Then, the whole group finished by singing the chorus together.

For students who didn’t feel comfortable singing, I offered egg shakers to softly play along with the music. This way, everyone could participate at their comfort level.

The song worked perfectly because it was simple and easy to learn, even if students had never heard it before. And, the structure of the song lent itself nicely to this type of songwriting.

Do you have Swifties in your music therapy groups or music classes too? Looking for more ways to use her songs therapeutically?

Check out this blog post with a Session Sneak Peak into how I use Taylor Swift’s songs and other pop songs in a goal-oriented way with my teen clients.

Here’s how I use “Trouble” by Taylor Swift to work on attention goals,

And, here’s how you can create an entire T. Swift-themed music therapy session!

For even more ways to infuse CREATIVITY and FUN into your sessions and classes, check out Elevate. It’s subscription where you receive music therapy session ideas for school-age students (Grades K-12) straight to your inbox each month!

You can choose from the Teen Package, the Attention Package, or the Holidays & Seasons Package (my personal favorite!) Each package is pre-approved by CBMT for 10 continuing education credits.

It’s a snow day here in Pennsylvania – a far cry from the 80 degree Januarys we experienced when we lived in Florida!

Before I go outside to shovel and sled with my kiddos, I wanted to write up a quick blog to continue the Session Idea Blast Series I started last week.

In the last post, I shared about a musical game that my middle and high school students LOVE.

They love it because it’s competitive, allows them to work in teams, and incorporates their favorite music.

I love it because it allows me to easily customize the goals to fit the needs of each of my unique students.

Today, I’m sharing about a musical experience called Pop Song Listening Games.

Games that help our clients refine the auditory perception and listening skills that help them succeed in classroom and work settings.

Here’s how it goes –

Start by creating a list of popular and client preferred music.

Then, on your favorite video platform, look up versions of those songs played on different instruments.

For example –

“Havana” by Camila Cabello played on flute.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto on trumpet.

“Antihero” by Taylor Swift on clarinet.

You can also play live versions yourself!

Play the song for your clients, and they’ll guess the song AND the instrument that is playing.

You can turn it into a game by dividing your clients into two or three smaller groups, or have the group participate as a whole.

After they correctly guess the song and instrument, play the original version of the song and everyone can jam and sing along.

This game is a great way for students to practice those oh so important attention and perception skills!

If these ideas are sparking your interest, then you’ll be glad to know that the doors for the Tune In To Teens E-Course and The Attention & Perception E-Course will be opening next week, on January 13th (at a discounted rate and for a limited time).

The session ideas and content in the courses are all geared toward school-age (K-8) and high school-age clients with disabilities, but can easily be adapted for other ages and clinical populations.

Each E-Course has three packages to choose from, ranging from 5-15 continuing education credits that are pre-approved with the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).

Lynda Miller, MT-BC, had this to say about The Attention & Perception course:

“Thank you for creating The Attention and Perception E-Course! I have been encouraged, inspired, and moved to action by the way you presented this subject. Instructions to “Stop now and fill out creativity worksheet” were effective and I used several of the ideas that same week. My clients have responded positively to both the interventions and my renewed excitement. Your E-Course has been worth every penny and my clients and I thank you!”

And Anna Ruffle, MT-BC, shared this with me about Tune in To Teens:

“Thank you for sharing your tips and experience with this population!! The features I enjoyed most were the resources, session ideas, implementation tips – all of it!! I would definitely recommend to anyone struggling with building rapport, coming up with ideas, presenting engaging, relevant content to teen groups. It was a very organized, detailed, helpful course! It is such a great, thought-through, and thorough course that I have already recommended it to other MTs I work with.“

More than 400 music therapists, educators, and professionals have taken Wholesome Harmonies E-Courses and successfully put the ideas into use in their sessions and classrooms.

Stay tuned when they open for enrollment at a discounted rate and for a limited time next week!

Happy New Year!

Things have turned chilly here in Pennsylvania. We have a snow storm on it’s way at the end of this weekend, which means my kiddos will inevitably have a snow day on Monday!

‘Tis the season of an erratic school schedule.

Nonetheless, I have big plans for later on in January – the Tune in To Teens and Attention & Perception E-Courses will be re-opened for enrollment!

So excited to be able to offer these popular courses again.

Leading up to the re-open launch, I’ll be doing a Session Idea Blast for Tweens & Teens by sharing some new ideas I’ve been implementing in my sessions recently.

The new year is the perfect time to gather and implement some fresh ideas, am I right?

Today, I’m sharing about a Musical Game called Music Man (a spin off of Hangman).

It’s as simple as this – choose a singer, band, song title, or song lyrics, and that will be what your students or clients need to guess.

Just as in regular Hangman, you’ll write on a wipe off board one blank line for each letter of the singer’s name, song title, etc.

Students can be in groups and guess letters until they can solve the Music Man puzzle and figure out the singer’s name, song title, etc.

(Check out the Tuneful Teens E-Book to see what I have students do if they guess the wrong letter, i.e. one that isn’t part of the singer’s name or song title!)

If they correctly solve the puzzle, we’ll then sing the song that they guessed and I’ll find a way to make it therapeutic based on those clients’ goals.

For example, if the song lyrics were “Baby now we got bad blood” by Taylor Swift, we might do a two-part movement pattern to the song.

If the band was Imagine Dragons, we might do instrument playing with cues.

This experience is awesome because tweens and teens LOVE it and are EXCITED about it, which means you have instant engagement.

But, you are working on social communication skills and expressive language, as students work together to solve the puzzle.

And, you can sprinkle in work on lots of other goals and objectives when you use the song therapeutically after the puzzle has been solved.

Tween/Teen engagement + work on therapeutic goals = WIN WIN.

If these ideas are sparking your interest, then you’ll be glad to know that the doors for the Tune In To Teens E-Course and The Attention & Perception E-Course will be opening on January 13th (at a discounted rate and for a limited time).

Sarah Jarvis, a music therapy intern, had this to say about The Attention & Perception course:

“Would I recommend the course to others? Oh, absolutely. Your voice is easy to listen to, your videos are excellently edited, and your material is succinct and straightforward. For someone with ADD, this was AWESOME and so simple to stay attentive. The edited videos of client interventions seamlessly fit into the instruction videos. It made it so easy to mentally jump from what a therapist can do to use this information and these techniques. Thank you for making it a fun learning experience!”

And John Kneip, MT-BC, shared this with me about Tune in To Teens:

“I think this was the most organized and clearly presented online music therapy course I have ever taken. Thank you for so much for the valuable and useful information. I really appreciated the amount of specific, practical, and useful ideas.”

More than 400 music therapists, educators, and professionals have taken Wholesome Harmonies E-Courses and successfully put the ideas into use in their sessions and classrooms.

Stay tuned when they open for enrollment at a discounted rate and for a limited time next week!

This summer, I started a Session Sneak Peek Series, where I give you a sneak peek into some of my sessions with tweens and teens with autism and related disabilities.

I always love to see what other music therapists are up to, and I thought you might too!

Last week, I gave you a peek into a session where I led a movement experience to a popular Imagine Dragons song, did The Affirmations Rap by Snoop Dogg (with some add ons), and led an auditory perception experience with pop music (“Despactio” on marimba anyone?)

This week, we’ll look at how I incorporated Taylor Swift into my sessions…in a therapeutic way, of course.

Music Man (aka Musical Hangman) Game – We played Music Man with Taylor Swift song lyrics. Whichever song the lyric came from, we used in the next experience…

Movement to T. Swift Songs – We then did a movement experience to songs like “Bad Blood” or “You Need to Calm Down” (one of my personal faves, as well as my students’). One movement pattern for the verse and one pattern for the chorus. This allowed the students to work on gross motor skills and alternating attention while they were jamming to T. Swift! It was a win-win.

“Shake It Off” – Then, we played instruments to my live version of “Shake It Off” on uke. Students were given instructions for what to do every time they heard “shake it off.” For example – switch instruments with the person next to you, or stand up and “shake it.” This gave students the opportunity to work on those all important auditory perception and listening skills, as well as selective attention.

T. Swift BINGO – Simply add all your clients’ favorite songs to the BINGO cards. This is another fun way to work on auditory perception and listening skills, as well as selective attention.

I hope this gave you a few creative ideas for your Tay Tay fans. Stay tuned as I share more Session Sneak Peeks this summer!

I used to start all my music therapy sessions with teens the same way I would start my sessions with kids – a Hello song.

I cringe now because for many of the teen clients I worked with, I think this made them feel like a child.

This was definitely not my intent.

My intent was to have a way to bring everyone together and mark the start of the session.

So, I moved away from Hello Songs and began using Group Rounds.

Here are some of the group rounds I’ve used that have been effective with middle and high school students with autism and related disabilities:

Drumming Round – Each student selects a drum. Together, we keep a steady beat and each student takes a turn to chant “My name is ____________, I like ___________ (favorite singer or band), and here’s my beat.” They then play a rhythm on their drum and the next student goes.

Instrument Round – I place a variety of rhythm instruments at the center of the table. Each student chooses an instrument and plays it in a way that demonstrates how they are feeling in that moment. For example, if they’re feeling tired, they might select the guiro and play it softly and slowly. The other students then try to guess how that student is feeling.

Song Round – I print out a list of songs on a piece of paper. Each student circles the song that best describes how they’re feeling that day. As they feel comfortable, they can share with the group and briefly state why they’re feeling that way.

Here are some of the song lists I’ve used:

“Complete Mess” by 5 Seconds of Summer

“Problems” by DeathbyRomy

“OKAY!” By KayCyy

“Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish

“Superstar” by Beach House

Other: ___________________________________________

“Falling” by Trevor Daniel

“Super Gremlin” by Kodak Black

“In My Head” by Lil Tjay

“A-O-K” by Tai Verdes

“Dynamite” by BTS

“Let’s Get It Started” by The Black Eyed Peas

Other: ____________________________

I hope these ideas get the wheels turning for you about how you can move from a Hello Song to group rounds with your teen clients and students.
