After a year and a half of creating the content and working on the tech side of things in the backend, I am so excited that this course is finally ready to share.

To give you another peek behind the curtain of some of the material you’ll see in the course, today I’m sharing 3 tips to help launch your business forward now.

These are things I wish I had done sooner, and have helped move the needle forward in my business –

1. Create Form Emails – Write once, copy and paste a thousand times.

I don’t know why this took me so long, but I finally  have form emails for the emails I tend to write over and over again. In both English and Spanish, I have pre-written emails:

• For the 1^st time I call a potential client and can’t reach them
• For the 2^nd time I call a potential client and can’t reach them (I add our information packet to this email)
• Requesting authorization form information from the parents for medicaid
• With instructions for how to get a new music therapy authorization with medicaid
• With our information packet and basic info about our services
• For those being placed on the wait list if we don’t have a therapist with availability

2. Separate Your Personal and Professional Income & Expenses – Do this from the very beginning. You (and your accountant) will thank me at tax time.

Create a business bank account so your personal and professional income and expenses are clearly separated. I use accounting software that is connected to my business bank account. So, all business income is recorded and all business expenses are deducted, which makes it easy to see where the money is coming from and where it is going. I can easily print reports which saves time and money at tax time.

3. Hire the Professionals – Some things are best left to the professionals.

Know where your creative expertise lies versus where you will save time by hiring someone else. When I first started my business, I tried to wear all the hats. ALL. The. Hats. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Now, I let me bookkeeper and accountant handle the financial side of things, and my web developer handle website fixes when they’re needed. This frees me up to do what I love and what I do best – plan and facilitate my music therapy sessions, and set up new contracts.

This is just a snapshot into the course, where I share even MORE tips and information to help you launch and grow a successful music therapy business.

I can tell you IT IS possible because I am living proof of it! I have created the music therapy business of my dreams, so I know that you can create yours.

I initially came up with the core content for a presentation I gave to University of Miami graduate students last year.

Today’s post is going to focus on why it is amazing to be a music therapy business owner. 

You’ll learn a bit more about my story of how I came to be a business owner in the course, but briefly it goes like this – I was working as a music therapist at a traditional “9 to 5” job at a school for children with disabilities. I love, love, LOVED it.

I eventually started taking on private clients on the side – seeing them in the evenings and on weekends. Needless to say, my schedule was full. This was all fine and dandy, until I had my first baby. It was at that point that I had enough contracts that I could go full time with my business.

And that was the best decision I ever made.

I wrote a bit about why I am in love with my business in this old blog post here.

It highlighted many of the reasons why I’ve been so thankful to have my own business – I was able to have both my babies home with me while I worked on the “business side” of things and didn’t have to put them in daycare.

It allowed me flexibility to work doing the job I love (taking on contracts at a higher rate than I was making as an employee), while also spending a significant amount of time with my babies at home.

Now that my two kiddos are school age, I have the flexibility to be home with them on snow days and sick days.

I can chaperone field trips and lead holiday-themed musical activities with their classes.

And, I can work while we’re at the beach (major life goal achieved here!)

Flexibility and location independence, while doing work that I love, are key reasons why I strongly feel it is amazing to be a music therapy business owner.

I highlight even more reasons in the course, sharing both the pros and honest cons (spoiler alert: there are more pros, in my opinion!)

Last Spring,  I was invited to give a two-part business presentation to music therapy graduate students at University of Miami.

It wasn’t until I started preparing this these talks that I realized…I love sharing about business ownership.

I realized I not only have a wealth of information to share on this topic, but I also really enjoy putting the information into easily digestible nuggets.

Starting a music therapy business can be extremely overwhelming.

There are taxes, licenses, insurance, and different business structures.

There are NPIs and EINs and everything varies by state!

But owning your own business is so worth it (in my opinion!) when you have time and financial freedom to do what you love, and when you can create your own schedule and be your own boss.

MT business ownership has it’s challenges, but I believe the benefits far outweigh those challenges.

Every time I can attend a field trip at my childrens’ school, go sledding with them on a snow day, or have slow summer mornings with them, I am so grateful I have my own business.

Every time we get to travel together and go on adventures throughout the year (we’ve gone parasailing, horseback riding, rail biking, snow tubing, zip lining, and mountain coaster riding), I am so grateful I have my own business.

Every time I look at my schedule with a mix of business tasks, music therapy session planning, creative resource development, and assignment grading, I’m grateful I have my own business.

Wholesome Harmonies began way back in 2006 when I started seeing one private client after work at my full time job at United Community Options of Miami.

Soon after, I received more calls and more referrals for private services from my alma mater, University of Miami (UM).

Parents would call the music therapy program director at UM to inquire about private music therapy services and the director would refer them to me.

Soon, I was seeing private clients almost every afternoon and evening after work, and on Saturdays and Sundays.

This continued on until my schedule started getting very full and I started getting very tired!

When I could no longer take on any new clients, I brought on a music therapy contractor, and have continued to add contractors year after year, until we now have a total of 15!

I am continually on the lookout to bring more music therapists and music teachers on board because our wait list has grown extensively, even after referring out to other practices. (We even get requests for art therapists, so if you know of any, please let me know!)

We would love to bring more music therapy contractors onto the team and we are EXPANDING across South and Central Florida. If you are an MTBC, graduate student or intern in Florida looking for flexible work opportunities, here’s the scoop:

• We offer music therapy & adapted lessons to individuals of all ages with autism & related disabilities, as well as older adults

When I sit down to write a blog post, I try to always keep the focus on you, the reader.

I think about what information you can take away and use in your sessions, or what information might be helpful in your clinical practice.

In today’s blog post though, the focus is on me more so than in other posts (sorry!) BUT, I thought the topic might still be helpful, or at least a little interesting.

It’s a “day in the life of” post. Actually a “week in the life of” would be more accurate, because as a momtreprerneur music therapist, every day in my week is different.

I run my music therapy business, Wholesome Harmonies, which includes myself and a team of 13 music therapists. I have an online biz with creative resources and continuing ed opportunities for music professionals. And, I teach music therapy courses virtually for my alma mater, University of Miami. (I truly love my career, though, so this rarely feels like “work.”)

Here’s a little peek into my week –

On Mondays, I ease into my week with no sessions scheduled. After my kiddos are off to school, I do some things to help me get grounded and ready for the week ahead. That might look like a brisk walk, journaling, a spiritual reading, or meditation.

Following that, I catch up on emails and do ALL THE THINGS related to running my business: calling clients who have inquired about services, putting together intake paperwork for new clients, invoicing, and working on authorizations for our clients in Florida who have medicaid (Sunshine Health). I usually squeeze in a few household chores before my girls get home from school.

On Tuesdays, I session plan and lesson plan in the morning. In the afternoon, I teach in-person adapted piano lessons to students here in Pennsylvania, where I now live. Following that, I supervise practicum students from St. Mary of the Woods College and facilitate virtual music therapy sessions for the YMCA of South Florida’s after school program. About 15 programs across South Florida Zoom into the sessions, and we have students who range in age from 6 – 21.

On Wednesdays, I use the morning to do grading and emailing with my virtual Intro to Music Therapy students. In the afternoon, I teach virtual jazz piano lessons, and facilitate more virtual sessions for the YMCA. Technology is incredible, isn’t it?

On Thursdays, I catch up more on my “business work” by calling clients, answering emails, and doing all the things that keep the business moving full steam ahead. I also try to incorporate some self care by taking a walk, or meeting up with local music therapists here in Gettysburg (there are 3 that I’ve connected with so far!)

On Fridays, I have supervision meetings with practicum students (one of my favorite things to do), and then head off to facilitate in-person sessions in the autistic support classroom at our local high school. These sessions are part of the Healing Arts Program I wrote about here, here, and here (check out these posts for TONS of creative arts therapy ideas!)

I also have Rockin’ & Readin’ at the Library sessions sprinkled throughout the year, as well as sessions with other programs that offer services to children and teens with autism and related disabilities.

Every day of my week is different, which I LOVE.

I have a mix of days with in-person sessions and days where I can cozy up on the couch and invoice. My business allows me to do the work I love and feel called to do, but I’m also free to attend events at my daughters’ school.
