If you’re on the fence –

Here’s what Bri Walstra, MT-BC had to say about Elevate –

“I thought the email portion was helpful! I actually really like the creativity worksheets because it forces me to sit down and think about the six ways to adapt one intervention. I think as music therapists we often get so busy and we read about intervention ideas but never figure out how we can implement them best.”

And Ashley Lewis, MT-BC shared this with me:

“I, of course love your resources and I think you are brilliant. Your work needs to be celebrated and I’ve told my friends about your website and how awesome your resources are.

The support I get from your resources makes my planning so much easier and less stressful. I am huge fan of yours and I can’t wait to see what you come up with next bc I will be buying it! I can’t wait for the next E-Book, keep crushing it over there!!”

We are just about to roll into the new school year.

(How is that even possible when it feels like summer was just starting?!)

Nevertheless, a new school year is right around the corner.

So, I wanted to share some fresh ideas for your music therapy sessions and classes with school-age children and teens.

But not just any ideas!

Ideas for how to use not-so-therapeutic songs therapeutically.

Many of the songs that are popular now have content and lyrics that aren’t appropriate for use in our sessions (due to restrictions from a school or facility) or that make it difficult to figure out how to possibly use them in a therapeutic manner.

But client preferred music is the gold standard, right?

So what do we do when our clients prefer music that has inappropriate language or content?

I am here to share several ways you can use client-preferred and popular music in a therapeutic way, even if that may seem impossible at first.

This is a creative challenge that my brain LOVES, so I put together a little mini-series on the topic.

First up – Name That Tune with a Twist.

The twist is playing the song on your primary instrument or a symphonic instrument (which for me is clarinet!)

You could also pull up a recorded version on YouTube such as “Havana” by Camila Cabello on flute or “Ocean Eyes” by Billie Eilish on saxophone.

These exist – look them up for yourself!

I prefer to present using live music, but YouTube does have some very creative options.

Name That Tune is a great musical game to work on social communication skills in a group setting or auditory perception and listening skills in a one-on-one setting.

And, to the point of this blog post, it’s a great way to work some of those not-so-therapeutic songs into your sessions.

When your client recognizes a song by their favorite artist, it will light them up, excite, and engage them. It lets them know that you value them and their musical preferences.

So, they are more likely to participate for the duration of the musical experience, and more likely meet their goals and objectives.

If this idea has helped or sparked something for you, keep that spark alive! Now through August 31, 2025, you can sign up for Elevate at a discounted rate AND with some awesome bonus material.

Elevate is an email idea subscription designed to help you infuse creativity and FUN into your sessions with school-age & teen clients with autism & related disabilities.

These resources will super charge you and get you ready for your music therapy sessions and classes this Fall.

After a year and a half of creating the content and working on the tech side of things in the backend, I am so excited that this course is finally ready to share.

You can take a sneak peek into the course’s Basic Package here (which includes the E-Course) and into the Pro Package here (which includes the E-Course, plus add ons like minisodes and personalized business coaching!)

The Basic Package is pre-approved by CBMT for 8 CMTEs, and the Pro Package is pre-approved for 20 CMTEs.

To give you another peek behind the curtain of some of the material you’ll see in the course, today I’m sharing 3 tips to help launch your business forward now.

These are things I wish I had done sooner, and have helped move the needle forward in my business –

1. Create Form Emails – Write once, copy and paste a thousand times.

I don’t know why this took me so long, but I finally have form emails for the emails I tend to write over and over again. In both English and Spanish, I have pre-written emails:

For the 1st time I call a potential client and can’t reach them

For the 2nd time I call a potential client and can’t reach them (I add our information packet to this email)

Requesting authorization form information from the parents for medicaid

With instructions for how to get a new music therapy authorization with medicaid

With our information packet and basic info about our services

For those being placed on the wait list if we don’t have a therapist with availability

2. Separate Your Personal and Professional Income & Expenses – Do this from the very beginning. You (and your accountant) will thank me at tax time.

Create a business bank account so your personal and professional income and expenses are clearly separated. I use accounting software that is connected to my business bank account. So, all business income is recorded and all business expenses are deducted, which makes it easy to see where the money is coming from and where it is going. I can easily print reports which saves time and money at tax time.

3. Hire the Professionals – Some things are best left to the professionals.

Know where your creative expertise lies versus where you will save time by hiring someone else. When I first started my business, I tried to wear all the hats. ALL. The. Hats. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Now, I let me bookkeeper and accountant handle the financial side of things, and my web developer handle website fixes when they’re needed. This frees me up to do what I love and what I do best – plan and facilitate my music therapy sessions, and set up new contracts.

This is just a snapshot into the course, where I share even MORE tips and information to help you launch and grow a successful music therapy business.

As the owner of a thriving business that operates with 17 therapists in three different states, and as someone who truly loves their business and the way their life is set up, I cannot wait to share this information with you.

Mark your calendar because the course launches Monday, June 2nd!

And hop on the wait list here so you’ll have access to the discounted rate and bonus material I’ll be offering:

Want to take a sneak peek inside the MT Biz 101 E-Course?

In today’s post, I’m giving you a peek behind the curtain.

I know firsthand that starting a music therapy business can feel overwhelming.

As someone who likes clear, step-by-step instructions for how to do things, but couldn’t find this kind of information when I was starting my business, I wanted to create this for other music therapists.

I designed the MT Biz 101 E-Course to shorten the learning curve and show you in simple, concrete steps how to launch and grow a successful music therapy business.

In Part 1, you’ll:

Go through the clear cut, step-by-step instructions for how to start your business, even if you have just one private client and zero business experience or training (like me!)

Hear the honest pros and cons of business ownership (spoiler alert – there are more pros than cons).

Read several articles and use the Business Brainstorming Worksheet to help you: define your Why, determine your goals in starting this business, and articulate what sets you apart from other companies that are similar.

Discover the one phrase I learned from my business mentor that helps me get unstuck Every Single Time I run into a roadblock.

In Part 2, you’ll:

Go deeper into the nuts and bolts of launching and growing your business.

Dive into topics such as: marketing, pricing, paperwork, multiple streams of income (my personal favorite!), and building your team.

Read several articles on gaining and retaining clients, as well as marketing.

Use the Business Brainstorming Worksheet to clarify the steps and organize the information needed to launch your business – everything from the name and number of your accountant, to your state’s funding sources, to your favorite business podcasts.

Find out my no-nonsense answers to questions like – What do I charge? Should I offer free trial sessions? And, can I give discounts? (My answer may surprise you).

Learn how to create multiple streams of income to set yourself up for financial security (believe it or not, this one can be FUN).

Here’s how you’ll learn:

You’ll have 3 months to complete the course on YOUR time from the comfort of YOUR home (or office or Starbucks!)

Upon successful completion of the course and worksheets, you’ll earn 8 continuing education credits that are pre-approved by CBMT.

Or, you can choose the Pro Package to earn 20 CMTEs in total – more on that next week!

As the owner of a successful business that operates with 17 therapists in three different states, and as someone who truly loves their business and the way their life is set up, I cannot wait to share this information with you.

Does this blog title sound like a bit of a stretch?

I can tell you IT IS possible because I am living proof of it! I have created the music therapy business of my dreams, so I know that you can create yours.

I have a mix of administrative work (that I can do if my kids are home sick), and clinical work (music therapy sessions “out in the field”!) that lights me up creatively.

I teach virtual courses for University of Miami and offer continuing education opportunities for music therapists, so I have multiple streams of income for financial security.

I LOVE the variety that each of these opportunities provides.

You can browse some of my older blogs posts on private practice and business ownership here, to get more of a glimpse into my day to day – every day is different!

Now your vision of business ownership might look completely different.

Perhaps you only want to do administrative work so you can be location independent. Or, maybe you want to be a solopreneur and do all clinical work.

In the Music Therapy Biz 101 E-Course (launching June 2, 2025!!), you will learn how to bring YOUR vision to life.

You’ll be prompted to picture your ideal set up and schedule.

Is it taking Fridays off?

Finishing your day at 3pm so you can home when your kids get off the school bus?

Taking 4 weeks of vacation every year?

When you own your own business, you are in the drivers seat, and that is why I am such an advocate of business ownership.

In the E-Course, I walk you through the process of visioning your ideal business, and taking the steps to set it up and launch.

I won’t sugar coat it, though – it can be complicated to run your own business.

There are taxes and licenses, and quarterly payments.

There are EINs and NPIs.

There is accounting software to learn.

Last Spring, I was invited to give a two-part business presentation to music therapy graduate students at University of Miami.

It wasn’t until I started preparing this these talks that I realized…I love sharing about business ownership.

I realized I not only have a wealth of information to share on this topic, but I also really enjoy putting the information into easily digestible nuggets.

Starting a music therapy business can be extremely overwhelming.

There are taxes, licenses, insurance, and different business structures.

There are NPIs and EINs and everything varies by state!

But owning your own business is so worth it (in my opinion!) when you have time and financial freedom to do what you love, and when you can create your own schedule and be your own boss.

MT business ownership has it’s challenges, but I believe the benefits far outweigh those challenges.

Every time I can attend a field trip at my childrens’ school, go sledding with them on a snow day, or have slow summer mornings with them, I am so grateful I have my own business.

Every time we get to travel together and go on adventures throughout the year (we’ve gone parasailing, horseback riding, rail biking, snow tubing, zip lining, and mountain coaster riding), I am so grateful I have my own business.

Every time I look at my schedule with a mix of business tasks, music therapy session planning, creative resource development, and assignment grading, I’m grateful I have my own business.

If you are looking for time and financial freedom, and the power to create a business and life that you truly love, then stay tuned.

I created a brand new E-Course that is just for music therapy business owners who are starting out. Wholesome Harmonies is an approved continuing education provide for the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT), so it will be available for 8-20 pre-approved continuing ed credits, depending on the package you choose)

The course is called MT Biz 101: How to Launch and Grow a Successful Music Therapy Business.

Whether you want to leave your employee position and start a full fledged business, or start a side hustle, this course will show you the exact steps to take to launch your business.

Mark your calendar now – the course will be opening for enrollment Sunday, February 1, 2026!

It’s a snow day here in Pennsylvania – a far cry from the 80 degree Januarys we experienced when we lived in Florida!

Before I go outside to shovel and sled with my kiddos, I wanted to write up a quick blog to continue the Session Idea Blast Series I started last week.

In the last post, I shared about a musical game that my middle and high school students LOVE.

They love it because it’s competitive, allows them to work in teams, and incorporates their favorite music.

I love it because it allows me to easily customize the goals to fit the needs of each of my unique students.

Today, I’m sharing about a musical experience called Pop Song Listening Games.

Games that help our clients refine the auditory perception and listening skills that help them succeed in classroom and work settings.

Here’s how it goes –

Start by creating a list of popular and client preferred music.

Then, on your favorite video platform, look up versions of those songs played on different instruments.

For example –

“Havana” by Camila Cabello played on flute.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto on trumpet.

“Antihero” by Taylor Swift on clarinet.

You can also play live versions yourself!

Play the song for your clients, and they’ll guess the song AND the instrument that is playing.

You can turn it into a game by dividing your clients into two or three smaller groups, or have the group participate as a whole.

After they correctly guess the song and instrument, play the original version of the song and everyone can jam and sing along.

This game is a great way for students to practice those oh so important attention and perception skills!

If these ideas are sparking your interest, then you’ll be glad to know that the doors for the Tune In To Teens E-Course and The Attention & Perception E-Course will be opening next week, on January 13th (at a discounted rate and for a limited time).

The session ideas and content in the courses are all geared toward school-age (K-8) and high school-age clients with disabilities, but can easily be adapted for other ages and clinical populations.

Each E-Course has three packages to choose from, ranging from 5-15 continuing education credits that are pre-approved with the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).

Lynda Miller, MT-BC, had this to say about The Attention & Perception course:

“Thank you for creating The Attention and Perception E-Course! I have been encouraged, inspired, and moved to action by the way you presented this subject. Instructions to “Stop now and fill out creativity worksheet” were effective and I used several of the ideas that same week. My clients have responded positively to both the interventions and my renewed excitement. Your E-Course has been worth every penny and my clients and I thank you!”

And Anna Ruffle, MT-BC, shared this with me about Tune in To Teens:

“Thank you for sharing your tips and experience with this population!! The features I enjoyed most were the resources, session ideas, implementation tips – all of it!! I would definitely recommend to anyone struggling with building rapport, coming up with ideas, presenting engaging, relevant content to teen groups. It was a very organized, detailed, helpful course! It is such a great, thought-through, and thorough course that I have already recommended it to other MTs I work with.“

More than 400 music therapists, educators, and professionals have taken Wholesome Harmonies E-Courses and successfully put the ideas into use in their sessions and classrooms.

Stay tuned when they open for enrollment at a discounted rate and for a limited time next week!

Have you ever had a time when you were going along, leading your session, and suddenly realized that things were totally out of control?

Kids were screaming, people were wandering, and no one was following your instructions?

Insert hand raising emoji here. I’ve been there.

We’ve all had moments where it’s a runaway train and we feel like we’re losing our clients.

The great news is, as music therapists, we have lots of tools in our tool belt to steer the train back on track.

Today, we’re going to take a look at some of those tools.

The first one is to Be Proactive.
If you haven’t already, read last week’s post about “How To Plan Engaging Experiences For Mixed Ages & Abilities.” I share some great tips for ensuring your clients are engaged at a level that is appropriate for them.

Second, Use Musical Cues to Capture Attention.
Sometimes things are so loud and chaotic, it’s impossible to be heard when speaking. In these moments, I’ll strategically use musical cues to capture the attention of my clients. That might look like a loud, fast strum on guitar, and then gradually bringing down the tempo and volume as clients begin to quiet. Or, it might look like very, very soft fingerpicking and singing, in hopes that clients will quiet in order to hear.

Third, Get Moving.
Rhythmic movement is one of my favorite ways to reengage clients. There may be some extra energy that clients need to get out, or they may be seeking sensory stimulation. In these cases, I’ll get everyone up and launch into a movement experience – like jumping or stomping – with a strong, rhythmic cue.

Or, Swaying.
In some cases though, our clients may be overstimulated by a chaotic situation. You must know your clients and be constantly observing them for signs of over (or under) stimulation. If they appear overstimulated, I may go into a slow and quiet swaying experience in a 6/8 meter. Or, simply slow, soft fingerpicking, to bring the energy in the room to a more calm and peaceful state.

Fourth, Get Creative.
This goes back to Tip #1 – being proactive in designing creative musical experiences that are custom made for your unique clients. If you do this, you are much less likely to lose your clients’ attention.

Which leads me to….next week, when The Elevate Email Subscription will be open for enrollment! This is a fantastic way to start the new year off with a bang, and get creative intervention ideas sent straight to your inbox each month.

There is a subscription for ideas for teen clients with disabilities, and a subscription for ideas that target attention & perception skills. (Or, better yet, you can get the Combo Pack which includes both subscriptions for a discounted rate!)

You’ll receive monthly musical experience ideas sent straight to your inbox each month, have access to instructor support for any questions, AND complete Creativity Worksheets to double or triple the number of ideas you walk away with and earn 7 CMTE credits.

Enrollment will be open (at a discounted rate) from Jan 16 – 20, 2023!

I couldn’t be more excited to share with you that The Attention & Perception E-Course is OPEN for enrollment (and available at a discounted rate), this week only, January 24 – 28th.

Attention and perception are fundamental abilities that underlie all the other skills we work on with our clients and students.

Our clients can’t improve social skills or practice motor skills until they can attend.

Our students can’t increase communication abilities or learn new academic concepts until they can attend.

The Attention and Perception E-Course was created for music therapists, educators, and other professionals who want to deepen their understanding of attention and perception, and use that knowledge to create engaging and effective musical experiences to target those processes.

The E-Course is open for enrollment THIS WEEK ONLY, 1/24 – 1/28, and during that time I’m offering a discount on all three packages:

Basic: E-Course
5 continuing ed credits (pre-approved)

The E-Course offers a thorough overview of attention and perception, and gives a multitude of creative intervention ideas for targeting auditory perception skills, and sustained, selective, divided, alternating, and joint attention.

You’ll watch more than 30 video demonstrations (!!), so you can see what the techniques look like in action during actual music therapy sessions.

And, throughout the course you’ll learn new original songs, as well as strategies for maintaining your clients’ attention throughout a session. You’ll have access to sheet music, colorful visuals, pop song rhythm sheets, listening guides, dance break MP3s, and creativity worksheets.

♪ Advanced: E-Course | Article Review + Reflection Questions
8 continuing ed credits (pre-approved)

For the article review, you’ll read “Joint Attention Responses of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder to Simple Versus Complex Music” (I’ll provide it to you!) and answer reflection questions. This will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of joint attention and the kind of music that is most effective in eliciting responses to joint attention.

Pro: E-Course | Article Review + Reflection Qs | Email Idea Subscription + Support (most popular!)
15 continuing ed credits (pre-approved)

For the email idea subscription, you’ll receive one package of session ideas that target attention and/or perception straight to your inbox at the beginning of each month. The ideas will be in PDF format and include step-by-step instructions, as well as all the materials you’ll need to prepare and facilitate the musical experiences. This includes lyrics, MP3s, visuals, musical game templates, or listening guides.

With each month’s idea you’ll also receive a Creativity Worksheet that prompts you to plan out goals, objectives, and musical experiences to work on that attention or perception skill with your own unique clients. You’ll also have email access to ask me any questions regarding the topics and techniques you’re learning in the course.

BONUS: Each package above comes with fun and engaging bonus material that’s perfect for use during teletherapy or in-person sessions: An Uptown Funk Listening Guide for your Bruno Mars fans.

I would love to have you join me in the course! It’s been so much fun to put together and is packed with great information.

One of the things I cherish most is the collection of session videos I have from my time working with children and teens in Miami over the past seventeen years.

I’ve used these music therapy videos, with written permission from the parents and clients, as teaching tools on my website, in presentations, and in my E-Courses.

They allow me to demonstrate what a technique might look like, so students and other music therapists can see how they might implement it with their own clients.

I continually receive feedback about how helpful these videos are in E-Courses.

Sarah Jarvis, a music therapy intern who took The Attention & Perception E-Course, said: “The edited videos of client interventions seamlessly fit into the instruction videos. It made it so easy to mentally jump from what a therapist can do to use this information and these techniques.”

Ashley Grampp, also a music therapy intern said: “I loved the videos! It allowed me to see everything from the the slides being put into action. Which helps me a lot!”

Julie De Keyzer, MM, MT-BC who took the Autism E-Course I previously offered on Music Therapy Ed, said: “I couldn’t stop watching the videos, I just got so excited. Now I’m going to go back and watch them all again and complete the action steps!!!”

And Kim Beck, MT-BC said: “The videos are awesome – it is so helpful to be able to watch you in action, Amy! I am SO loving the course! I hope that you will do more courses in the future! This course has been fantastic! :)”

Last week, I shined a spotlight on some of the cool attention techniques that participants learn in The Attention & Perception E-Course.

And the week prior to that, some of the cool auditory perception techniques that participants learn in the course.

This week, I’m going to share a small sampling of the 35 videos that course participants get to watch in The Attention & Perception E-Course.

The video demos teach:

How to incorporate your primary instrument (whether it’s the clarinet or the cello!) into your sessions:

Over the next week or so on the blog, I’ll continue to highlight some of the special features of The Attention & Perception E-Course that make it stand out from other continuing education courses.

Debi Kret, MM, MT-BC had this to say about the course:

“I worked in Special Ed for almost 25 years and you and I are on the same page. I loved the way you used your clarinet. I keep telling my interns to use their primary instrument. I have also tried to explain several of the concepts like the way you described the instrument and had them count the pieces while you put it away. Great to have video examples for my interns!”

And Laura Pruett, MT-BC shared this with me:

“I think the course is great. I didn’t realize there was so much to dissect about attention and perception, it was very informative. My favorite feature of the course was how organized everything was.”

More than 400 music therapists, educators, and professionals have taken Wholesome Harmonies E-Courses and successfully put the ideas into use in their sessions and classrooms.

If you’re interested in learning more about the E-Course, be sure to hop on the wait list now!
