I recently began a series called “Spotlight on…” This series focuses on different facilities and programs that provide services and resources to individuals with special needs, as well as places where I provide music therapy services. My first spotlight in this series was on Early Beginnings Academy, where I work full-time as a music therapist.
Today’s spotlight will be on The Friendship Circle, where I work as a contract music therapist. The Friendship Circle is an amazing program found all over the country that brings children and teens with disabilities together with high school volunteers (aka “buddies”). This program provides respite to caregivers and a morning of fun, excitement, and friendship for the children and teens with special needs. Together with their buddy, the children and teens take part in yoga, karate, sports, cooking, art classes, hip hop, and of course…music therapy! I am now going into my second year working with the Friendship Circle, providing music therapy services every other Sunday morning.
Check out the video for Friendship Circle Miami that probably explains the program better that I can. (Be sure to look for a little music therapy action throughout the video!)
I am SO excited because the new program year begins tomorrow, so I have been busy learning new songs and planning activities for both age groups. Click here to see one of the most popular activities that I did with Teen Scene (the teen group). Stay tuned as I share more activities that I do with both groups!
